In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt began a major renovation of the White House, including the relocation of the President’s offices from the Second Floor of the Residence to the newly constructed temporary Executive Office Building (now known as the West Wing). The Roosevelt renovation was planned and carried out by the famous New York architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. Roosevelt’s successor, President William Howard Taft, had the Oval Office constructed within an enlarged office wing.
Upon boarding and landing, the president is greeted by Marines wearing the Marine Blue Dress uniform.
Ford’s pool was built on the South Lawn, and Roosevelt’s indoor pool was covered and turned into a press briefing room. It wasn’t until 1909—over a century after the White House’s completion—that the Oval Office was created. Then-President William Howard Taft added this room and had it painted in an army green shade, which has since been changed as every president likes to make the space their own. Until 1901, what we know as the White House was actually called the Executive Mansion, which then-President Theodore Roosevelt didn’t find ideal—given that many U.S. states had a governor’s residence that was also called the executive mansion. Roosevelt subsequently coined the term that we know and still use to this day, which can also be seen atop copies of his stationery. The White House was designed by Irish architect James Hoban in the Neoclassical style of architecture and built over the course of eight years (from 1792 to 1800).

A $477.5 million extension of Terminal 1 into a formerly open area includes the first Terminal Vertical Core, which will connect the building to a pedestrian walkway to the future CTA Center Automated People Mover Station. The new construction also includes a bus port, and additional ticket counters and baggage carousels, plus restrooms and a service-animal relief area. The Headhouse will be an 840,000 square foot new state-of the art building replacing the existing Central Terminal Building and the former parking garage (P2).
The original master plan provided for the new Terminal B’s design competition suggested a headhouse with traditional peninsular concourses extending into the airfield. The developer and design team instead had a bold vision of creating two island concourses accessed from the main terminal through two 450-foot-long, 65-foot-high pedestrian bridges. The comprehensive redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport represents one of the most significant airport redevelopment projects in the United States in more than 20 years. The security hall looks as if it could easily handle the busiest of holiday travel days so long as TSA properly staffs it. A US$ 4bn construction upgrade program for the 1.3 million square foot Terminal B LaGuardia Airport project is approaching its completion, with over 90% of the work done.
Dual pedestrian bridges span active aircraft taxi lanes – a first in the world – and connect the main part of the terminal to two island concourses. Passengers walk above aircraft as they make their way to their gate, all while enjoying views of the iconic Manhattan skyline. In addition, this island and bridge design increases the amount of taxiway space for aircraft. Terminal B truly celebrates the best of New York and serves as a gateway we can all be proud of. Entry to LAX is only allowed for airline passengers and persons meeting, accompanying or assisting them, and airport personnel whose employment requires their presence.
The fourth-floor features shops, restaurants and other customer amenities, and concourse bridges. The Skanska-Walsh team also completed construction of the Terminal B Eastern Concourse in 2018. The Eastern Concourse's cutting-edge design and customer amenities allow travelers ample space across 18 gates.

Artwork is a major theme throughout the new space and starts on a large scale in the check-in hall. The northern wall of the building is lined end-to-end with a subway-inspired tiled mosaic mural, featuring various New York City icons. The four airlines currently using the new Headhouse (American, Southwest, United and Air Canada) are spread across four check-in counter piers with ample space separating each kiosk.

Under this plan, old facilities are demolished only as new facilities are completed to ensure the airport – which handled a record 31 million passengers in 2019 – never loses capacity. For example, the new Headhouse sits in the footprint of what was the old P2 Parking Garage. As the world’s first airport to earn LEED v4 Gold certification, LaGuardia’s new Terminal B has helped pioneer sustainability measures for civil infrastructure projects. While the old terminal building did have a food court, modern security needs meant that it sat outside of security where most passengers did not go. Step into the facility from the parking garage or bus stop and you are greeted not by low ceilings, dim lighting and cramped check-in areas, but by a comparatively enormous main hall flooded with natural light with actual room to spread out.
For example, during the demolition of the original parking garage, the Skanska-Walsh team was able to recycle 21,604 tons of concrete from the demolition of the original parking structure. Of this recycled concrete, 2,475 tons – roughly five million pounds were reused on the adjacent job site. The P3 model employed for the redevelopment allowed Skanska to work closely with the Port Authority, LaGuardia Gateway Partners and other stakeholders to implement industry-leading sustainability practices across all aspects of the projects. The team developed a series of three-dimensional models – as well as 4D or time-dependent models – to develop the project phasing that visualized both the new airport layout and how the existing structures and roadway networks would be staged and modified over the project’s duration. With the schedule in place, Skanska used 360-degree photography and laser scanning to capture accurate, real-time construction updates. These allowed the team to measure progress, work collaboratively with subcontractors to resolve construction challenges, and coordinate work across different areas of the project site. The four-story, 850,000-squear-foot facility houses passenger services and amenities, including airline check-in, baggage drop-off and pick-up, and security. The steel-framed terminal, with its linear, precisely articulated, and dynamic form, presents a modern, cohesive face to both the landside and airside.
As needs change, this location will give Terminal B the adaptability to accommodate evolving security screening and technology. Instead of providing rigid parameters for each of its airline tenants, the ‘common-use’ design allows airlines to move easily within the terminal, expanding or shrinking their footprints within the terminal. The sustainable design strategies in the new Terminal B, which is targeting LEED Silver certification, include generous use of non-glare daylighting, passive shading, natural local materials, and storm resiliency. The innovative island-and-bridges concept was the key factor in that success, enabling the construction team to build the new headhouse, concourse, parking garage, roadways and two miles of additional taxiway with minimal disruptions. In developing the island-and-bridges scheme for the design competition, HOK’s architects and structural engineers first needed to quickly determine whether building two 450-foot-long steel truss bridges connecting the headhouse with the concourses housing the gates was a viable option. Terminal 6 will be refreshed as part of a $230 million modernization project that began in early 2021, creating more space for passengers and bringing upgraded technology to the building following two projects that were completed in the 2010s to renovate the ticketing lobby, bag claim and concourse areas.
